A new ad platform is easy to mistake for a new source of customers. The real question for an advertiser is narrower: can this channel deliver incremental leads or sales at a cost the business can afford?

What actually happened

On October 21, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT Ads into 26 additional countries, taking total availability to 89. It says more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns since launch. New markets include Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

OpenAI says advertisers can access campaigns through technology partners or self-service Ads Manager. Ads appear in ChatGPT's Free and Go plans and are labeled separately from assistant answers. Plus, Pro and Enterprise remain ad-free. The announcement promises more formats, objectives, buying options and measurement capabilities in the future, so advertisers should evaluate the controls available today rather than the roadmap.

Why a small team cares

Imagine a small online language school selling English lessons across Latin America. Adding Colombia or Chile to an eligible campaign could create a new way to reach people researching training options through conversation. The attraction is intent: users may be comparing specific courses, not merely scrolling past a generic ad.

But conversational context does not automatically create a measurable sales opportunity. The school still needs an offer that works in the target country, localized pricing, a credible landing page and a way to distinguish genuine enrolled students from cheap enquiries. A low cost per click means little when leads cannot afford the course or never book.

For a lean advertising operation, the useful experiment isolates one geography and one offer. Tracking should capture qualified leads and actual purchases where possible, instead of relying exclusively on the platform's reported engagement.

Hype vs useful

The headline figure of more than 100,000 advertisers is a platform adoption metric, not a conversion benchmark. It does not tell us median cost per lead, campaign profitability or how inventory varies by country. OpenAI also does not claim that every advertiser can target every market under identical terms.

ChatGPT ads being separate from responses is also worth understanding. Paying for placement does not mean the assistant recommends the advertiser or changes its answers. That makes creative quality, relevance, measurement and the destination page essential parts of the test.

I would not cut a performing search campaign to chase a first-mover story. Keep a small fixed trial budget, record lead quality and acquisition cost, and expand only if the economics survive verification against your own customer data. If the campaign tools do not provide adequate reporting, that is a reason to wait, not to guess.
