What actually happened

Reddit told investors on October 29 that search referral traffic declined meaningfully in its third quarter, with the downturn accelerating toward the end of the period. During October, the company said search traffic fell by more than one million referrals per week on average. Logged-out and web visitors were especially affected.

CEO Steve Huffman linked the problem partly to the way Google increasingly answers questions inside search experiences, including AI-generated answers. Reddit is also considering tests that require visitors to sign in to view more of the site, shifting emphasis toward the audience it can reach directly.

The figures require context. Reddit still reported 130.3 million daily active unique users in the third quarter, up 12% year on year, while its US daily active audience declined quarter on quarter. The search loss is real according to Reddit; attributing the entire decline to AI answers is the company's interpretation, not a controlled causal study.

Why a small team cares

Consider a specialist online retailer whose blog ranks for product comparisons and buying advice. Those articles might still be shown prominently in search, but shoppers can obtain a short answer without clicking through. A rankings report alone would not reveal the lost visits or potential sales.

The practical distinction is between being visible and acquiring a visitor. Search Console impressions measure exposure; clicks and click-through rate capture the response; analytics and sales records show whether visits produce useful business. A good month in one column can hide deterioration in another.

Informational articles are not automatically worthless. Some bring buyers into a longer journey, support email acquisition or help commercial pages rank. But a small business needs to know which pages produce customers and which simply collect impressions before spending more on content production.

Hype vs useful

Reddit is unusually large, has a huge volume of question-driven content and depends on search differently from many small businesses. Its numbers are a warning, not a universal benchmark. A two-percent decline in one regional audience also should not be presented as a two-percent decline for the whole platform.

The useful response is measurement discipline. Keep conventional SEO working on high-intent pages while tracking where answer engines reduce clicks. If visibility holds but visits fall, the channel is changing. If qualified sales remain strong, moving budget away from search purely because of an AI narrative would be premature.
