What actually happened
Zoho announced a new version of Analytics on October 28, turning Ask Zia into an assistant that routes questions to six specialized agents. They cover data analysis, dashboard visualization, data preparation, formula creation, SQL and data science or machine-learning tasks. Zoho also announced more than 30 new connectors, including payment and point-of-sale services.
The more consequential feature may be its semantic layer. A business can specify what a metric actually means, and Ask Zia's agents use that shared definition instead of inventing one from column names. Zoho says subscription pricing remains unchanged, with monthly AI credits included, although functionality is opening gradually across regions.
Why a small team cares
Consider a small online retailer whose weekly report combines an order export, payment settlements and a spreadsheet of returns. The owner wants to know why net revenue fell last month. An assistant may be able to clean the data, compare categories, generate a chart and suggest what deserves investigation, reducing several manual reporting steps.
But a fast explanation is useless when the underlying metric is wrong. Gross order value, collected payments and net revenue are three different numbers. If refunded orders remain in the total, the AI can deliver a convincing explanation of the wrong business result.
That is why the semantic layer deserves more attention than the chat interface. Consistent definitions make it possible to compare reports from one week to the next and explain where numbers came from. The value is less time spent building a trustworthy report, not simply producing more dashboards.
Hype vs useful
Zoho describes agents capable of diagnostic and prescriptive analysis, but that is a vendor capability claim, not proof that every generated business explanation is accurate. A model may find correlations, confuse time periods or propose actions without enough context.
I would evaluate it with known answers first: refunded revenue, repeat orders, margin by category and sales by channel. The system needs to show its workings and preserve the same definitions when the question is rephrased. Custom agents and MCP connections are interesting later; adding them before the basic figures reconcile only multiplies uncertainty.
